Truffaldino Says No began as a short play during the 2008-09 PlayGround season (inspired by the topic "Arlecchino") and was premiered at the 13th annual Best of PlayGround Festival (May 2009). Ken subsequently received a PlayGround commission to adapt the short into a new full-length play, which received a staged reading as part of the next year's Best of PlayGround Festival.
Truffaldino Says No will premiere at Shotgun Players' Ashby Stage, with significant support from PlayGround's New Play Production Fund. The production is directed by PlayGround Company Member M. Graham Smith and features company members Brian Herndon, Gwen Loeb and Michael Phillis (all of whom participated in various stages of the short and full-length plays' development), with stage manager Bethanie Baeyen.
ABOUT THE PLAY: Doomed to repeat the traditional life of an Italian harlequin, Truffaldino shirks his Commedia Dell’arte upbringing and two-steps across the Atlantic to find a strangely parallel world in the States. The cast of characters may have evolved from old to new world sensibilities, but a host of hilarious problems are one and the same. Truffaldino’s search for himself turns into a poignant and ridiculous romp across two continents. Genres collide when classic commedia and modern sitcom share the stage.
ABOUT THE PLAYWRIGHT: Ken Slattery studied Drama & Theatre Studies at Trinity College Dublin. Since moving to the US from Ireland, Ken produced his full-length play American Irish in 2005, and has been a member of the PlayGround Writers pool since 2003. He was awarded the PlayGround Fellowship and commissioned to write Truffaldino Says No for the 2009-10 season. Ken is a company member of Killing My Lobster.
