It began as a writing exercise, introduced by Paula Vogel to the Brown University graduate playwriting students. Students were given a prompt and had three days to generate original ten-minute plays. The results were presented as script-in-hand staged readings by fellow students in a little black box theatre on Saturday at midnight. The plays covered a broad range, from word play to experimental physical theatre, from tragedy to farce. And along the way, new voices emerged and new relationships developed. Sound familiar? It should. This was the inspiration for what would become PlayGround in 1994 and ultimately our celebrated Monday Night PlayGround staged reading series, now marking its 20th year. Many programs have been added over the last nineteen years, including the PlayGround Festival of New Works, New Play Production Fund, PlayGround Film Festival and even PlayGround-LA (beginning their second season this Sunday), but Monday Night PlayGround remains at the core.
On Monday evening, September 23, PlayGround will kick off its 20th season at the Rialto Cinemas Elmwood in Berkeley with a special season announcement, including introduction of the 2013-14 Writers Pool, Resident Playwrights and Company, plans for Monday Night PlayGround and the 18th PlayGround Festival of New Works, the 3rd Film Festival lineup and upcoming world premiere co-productions emerging from PlayGround's full-length commissioning program. Friends, family and fans are invited to come hear the news, raise a glass to the new season and mingle with PlayGround artists, subscribers and staff. Monday Night PlayGround subscriptions and season renewals, as well as Best of PlayGround script anthologies, will also be on sale.
