PlayGround Announces Planet Earth New Play Festival Topic!

IS EARTH F**KED? On Tuesday, PlayGround playwrights attended a special presentation by the founders of Planet Earth Arts, a new initiative of Sustainable World Coalition, in preparation for the topic announcement for the Monday Night PlayGround season opener and inaugural Planet Earth New Play Festival, taking place at 8pm, Monday, October 20 at Berkeley Repertory Theatre and being repeated in its entirety at 7:30pm, Tuesday, October 21 at Stanford’s Cubberley Auditorium. This morning, PlayGround announced the topic: IS EARTH F**KED?, drawn from a session of earth and space scientists at the Fall 2012 Meeting of the American Geophysical Union, held annually in San Francisco. Fifty Bay Area playwrights have just four-and-a-half days to generate their original short scripts inspired by the topic and the top six works will be presented as script-in-hand staged readings on October 20 and October 21. For more information on this month’s topic, visit http://playground-sf.org/topic. Tickets and discount season subscriptions can be purchased online at http://playground-sf.org/boxoffice.

Planet Earth New Play Festival is a new initiative designed to inspire playwrights to create bold new works for the stage that explore issues of planetary sustainability and social justice. PlayGround Artistic Director Jim Kleinmann commented, “Our partnership with Sustainable World Coalition couldn’t have come at a more crucial time! The Planet Earth New Play Festival represents an incredible opportunity for the Bay Area’s best new writers to help address issues central to our very survival.”

PlayGround audiences get to enjoy a unique behind-the-scenes perspective, with a free Pre-Performance Discussion at 7:10pm, featuring members of Planet Earth Arts Initiative and selected playwrights.  Audience members can also experience the thrill of being a producer through the monthly People’s Choice Awards, helping to determine which plays and playwrights go on for consideration in PlayGround’s annual showcase, the Best of PlayGround Festival.

PlayGround, the Bay Area’s leading playwright incubator, provides unique development opportunities for the Bay Area’s best new playwrights, including the monthly Monday Night PlayGround staged reading series, annual PlayGround Festival of New Works, full-length play commissions and support for the production of new plays by local playwrights through the New Play Production Fund.
