PlayGround Company in the News Mar-2017

Read on to learn more about PlayGround Company Member and Alumni recent news, current happenings, and upcoming events.

Rachel Bublitz has been commissioned by the Egyptian Youtheatre to write a new full-length play called CHEERLEADERS VS. ALIENS which will be produced in Park City, Utah in the Spring of 2018. Her ten-minute play LEAN IN WITH LIZ!, written and selected for Monday Night PlayGround in March of 2015, is being performed later this month in Miami, Florida with Artistic Vibe's Flip The Script Festival, as well as San Francisco State University's The Future Is Female Festival. Rachel also recently took a position at Weber State University teaching theater.

Teddy Spencer is currently touring with the Reduced Shakespeare Company in WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE'S LONG LOST FIRST PLAY (ABRIDGED). He recently filmed an episode of the web series “Studio Kings” directed by Kyle Newacheck from Comedy Central's “Workaholics”, and later this month he will be shooting the pilot episode of “The Highlighter Reading Series” with fellow PlayGrounders Michael Barrett Austin, Christian Haines, and Melissa Ortiz.

L. Zephyr’s short piece, LIST will be featured in Genova Productions festival on March 21st at the Stonewall Inn in NYC. If you’re in the Big Apple, come on by.

NO BELIEVERS, a play by Roberta D'Alois, featuring Gabriel Ross and Radhika Rao, will have a reading on March 19 at 2 PM at ACT's Costume Shop (1117 Market St San Francisco) as part of ACT's Art Space program. 

Madeline Puccioni will see two of her short plays, COOLEY'S REEL and GERTRUDE (yes, that Gertrude) up and dancin' in City Lights New Plays Series which opens April 30 in San Jose.   

Michael J. Asberry is in rehearsals for NORA with the Shotgun Players. Previews begin 3/16. Opening night is 3/23. 

Julia McNeal is starting rehearsal for David Grieg's THE EVENTS at Shotgun Players, directed by Susannah Martin. A timely two-hander, involving community choirs (!), taking on the issues of race and violence and our deeper humanity. First preview May 4th.

Katja Rivera is directing The Good Indian, the pilot script for The Highlighter Reading Series. 

Douglas Giorgis just finished a Rough Reading Series project with Playwrights Foundation; he is now performing in The Stagebridge Playwriting Showcase with Anthony Clarvoe as well as performing in the reading of TENN by Kathy Boussina at The Dragon Theatre.

Spare Stage (SF) announced that it will produce a workshop series of Concert Performances for the new musical THE RIGHT NOTE with books and lyrics by Jerome Joseph Gentes and music and lyrics by Rice Majors in early 2018. The musical updates Shakespeare's Twelfth Night to our contemporary world, where the major characters are competing on a singing reality TV show called “The Right Note.”

Resident playwright Karen Macklin's play LOTUS IN THE FIRE had a reading at the SF Playhouse on January 9th, which included PlayGround actors Lindsey Marie Shmeltzer, Michael Phillis, Morgan J. Booker, and Melissa Haines, as well as PlayGround director Molly Noble. Her play STRANGER IN A STRANGER LAND was selected as a finalist for Nylon Theater's "Best of This Round's On Us" in NYC. She also completed teaching a playwriting course at the Bay School San Francisco. 

Patricia Cotter's play, WHY I'M VOTING FOR JOHN ANDERSON (which was developed as part of a PlayGround Reading Series, thanks to the June Anne Baker Prize), is a finalist for the 2017 Premiere Stages Play Festival and will have a reading on March 11th at the Murphy Dunn Theatre, in New Jersey.
